Brown Sugar Cinnamon Applesauce recipe by Barefeet In The Kitchen

This is not your average applesauce. This applesauce is thick, chunky, sweet and full of flavor. You can eat it with a spoon or a fork.

If you’ve never tried homemade applesauce, then you have no idea what you are missing. I started making this a few years ago and it has forever changed my taste for applesauce.

Brown Sugar Cinnamon Applesauce

  • 8 apples peeled, halved and cored, I used honeycrisp apples
  • Juice from one lemon or the equivalent amount of lemon juice concentrate no more than 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1 tablespoon water


  • Place your apple pieces in the crockpot. Add lemon juice, water and vanilla, sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar on top. Toss to coat thoroughly.
  • Cover and cook on low for approximately 6 hours. When the apples are very tender, mash them with a potato masher or a fork until they are the consistency you desire. I like to leave a lot of chunky pieces in the sauce. If you are in the mood, you can even try this.

    I do a variation on this at home and it couldn't be simpler.

    I use Penzey's Spices because I think they're high quality and you get lots of bang for your buck.

    I use their "apple pie spice" in my recipes. I have never been disappointed.

    The only applesauce my kids would eat was their grandma's homemade. She used Stayman Winesap and after they were done she put them through a food mill. The kids loved her pink applesauce. We used Rambo once too and they were good, fresh from the tree.

    I have 1 1/2 pecks of apples waiting to be made into applesauce using this recipe. Two weeks ago I made a batch with 3/4 peck of apples. It's gone already!! I can see I'll be doing this on a regular basis! I love your recipe. Thank you!

    Do you have any idea about how many cups of apples that would be? I had a friend give me apples already cut up , but I have no idea how many there were. thanks!

    Well it’s Sunday afternoon 11/11/2018 am now trying this new Brown sugar apple cinnamon sauce in the slow cooker,, can’t wait to see and taste..😋bet it’s gonna be delish,, I figured I’d give it a try,,cuz my granddaughter was asking for apple sauce 👍👍.. Happy slow cookering Everyone!!

    First time making homemade applesauce and this is the recipe I chose. I had two little girls bugging me the entire time it was cooking saying it smelled good, they just couldn’t wait. Finally when it was finished I was surrounded by the little ones asking to try some. Gave them a little dollop to taste and they just kept coming back! I had to shoo them with promises of more later so I could let it cool and put it away. It isn’t super sweet or anything, just right for everyone. We did a purée of the apples for the little mouths, but the next batch may just be a little chunky for the bigger mouths5 stars

    I dont own a crackpot. What would be the instruction on cooking it in a regular deep pot? I would really love to try this recipe but don’t wanna screw it up!
