Tangy, flavorful ranch dip can be made from scratch in just 5 minutes!
Whether we are snacking on fresh vegetables, dipping roasted potatoes or Southwest Chicken Bites into this ranch, or tossing it with a salad, this quick and easy homemade ranch dip is a staple in our lives.
In my quest to eliminate many processed foods from our lives, I began playing with ranch dressing recipes about 10 years ago.
We’ve been making this dip for a number of years now and after a bit of tweaking, we’ve declared it absolutely perfect. And as it turns out, many of you agree!
There is always a container of ranch dip in our refrigerator along with a box of ready to eat vegetables for snacking. (Check out this post for tips on storing all your fresh produce to keep it fresh for as long as possible!)
If you happen to need a dairy-free option, you can make your own Dairy Free Sour Cream! (It really works!)
If you have an abundance of fresh herbs on hand, here’s a recipe for Ranch Dip made with fresh herbs.
The extra dill in this dip really kicks the flavor up a notch and the squeeze of lemon provides plenty of tang. My older boys can stir together a batch of this dip in just a few minutes.
Keeping our refrigerator stocked with ranch dip is one of their jobs. The dip will keep nicely in the refrigerator for up to a week, but it rarely lasts that long in our house.
I often pair this ranch dip with some grilled chicken and vegetables for an easy dinner.
Homemade Dip Recipes
We love having fresh dips in the house for snacking. This Southwest Ranch Dipping Sauce is a fun, spicy twist on the original Ranch Dip.
Homemade Tzatziki Sauce by Kalyn’s Kitchen is next on my list to try. I love tzatziki with cucumbers or Laffa Bread.
Dill Pickle Dip is a tasty snack with pretzels, crackers, or vegetables.
Fresh Corn Dip with Bacon, Avocados, and Tomatoes disappears lightning fast any time we make it.
Spicy Hot Jalapeno Ranch Dip is a favorite with Sean and Sam both. (My oldest son would happily dip everything he eats in a spicy sauce.)
Homemade French Onion Dip by Rachel Cooks is also on my list to try. I’m betting it’s going to be a hit with my whole family.
Ingredient Substitutions for Ranch Dip
Lemon juice is my first choice when making this dip. However, if you happen to be out of lemons, vinegar works as well.
We use the full tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar for this recipe, feel free to adjust it for your tastes if you don’t care for as tangy a ranch dip.
We like the full ¾ teaspoon of dried dill in this recipe, feel free to adjust that to taste as well. if you would rather not have such a strong dill flavor.

- Whisk together the mayo and sour cream until smooth.

I had Buffalo Chicken Bites for the Super Bowl but forgot to buy Ranch dressing. Never knew Ranch was so easy but your recipe is the best. I made mine with plain yogurt. I will never buy the packets again.
Mary Younkin says
I am so happy you discovered this recipe. It really is that easy and plain yogurt or greek yogurt is a fantastic swap.
Bryan says
I live in Southern China as a teacher and do not have any hope of buying ranch dressing at stores, or I could pay huge amounts of money for imports. This recipe was awesome, and people loved it. I feel like this recipe helped redefine the term, comfort food! Thanks.
Mary Younkin says
I’m so happy it was a hit, Bryan!
Rachel K says
I just made this & it’s great. I didn’t have sour cream, so used nonfat Greek yogurt instead.
Mary Younkin says
I’m glad you found a way to make the recipe work with what was in your fridge, Rachel. Happy cooking!
Carla says
I’ve been making this recipefor at least 3 yrs. Only changes I make depend on the chives and parsley when they are fresh in the garden – I use them. But I keep this on hand. Surely helps me up my vegetable intake with just a tad of the dip. Thank you, Mary!
Mary Younkin says
You are welcome, Carla! I’m glad the recipe has stayed a favorite in your kitchen.
Michelle Shuster says
This dip odd the BEST I’VE EVER HAD!!!!!! What would you suggest to thin it down a smidge to use for salad dressing?
Mary Younkin says
A bit of milk or buttermilk will work nicely for that, Michelle. I’m thrilled you love the dip. You might need to tweak the spices a bit to adjust for that. You can also make this ranch dressing recipe: https://barefeetinthekitchen.com/homemade-ranch-salad-dressing/

This is an amazing recipe!! So glad I found it! Thank you so much! Do you happen to know if there’s a rough expiry date? I’ll be keeping mine in the fridge
Mary Younkin says
This will last fine for as long as the dairy products are good. I usually recommend eating it within a week or so, Kate.
Harry says
Added more dill and garlic and no lemon.
Awesome
Dipping with tostitos with hint of guacamole
Mary Younkin says
That sounds delicious, Harry. I’m so glad you loved the ranch dip. Enjoy!
C J says
Great! I did change it a bit though. Hope that’s ok. I bumped up the chives and dill to a TBSP and the others to a tsp. For salt I used celery salt at 1/2 tsp with 1/2 tsp of pepper. And I used 3 TBSP of apple Cider vinegar instead if lemon juice. Thank you so much for this amazing dip!
P.S. I’d post a pic but don’t know how to do that here
Mary Younkin says
You’re welcome! I’m glad to hear that you loved the ranch, and that you were able to make the recipe your own.
Jenny says
This has become my go-to ranch recipe! I love it. It’s so easy. I don’t even measure out the ingredients – I just match the proportions based on how much dressing I need. Just delicious.
Mary Younkin says
That’s how we make it too, Jenny! I’m glad you love it.
Diane P Henry says
The ranch dip was perfect. The right amount of everything.
We enjoyed it with fresh garden veggies. Better than any store bought version.
We didn’t have dried Chives and still tasted great.
Thanks
Mary Younkin says
Glad to hear that the ranch dip was a hit, Diane! Enjoy.
Cheryle says
If you want to make a smaller quantity of dip, what is the proportion of dry mix to liquid? For example, if I just want 1/2 c of dip, how much dry mix do you recommend?
Mary Younkin says
I don’t typically prepare the seasonings as a dry mix. You can reduce the recipe size by adjusting the number of servings in the recipe card. That will reduce all of the ingredient amounts appropriately.
